Improving Reading Scores Through Technology Integration

Jeongwha Lors
8th Grade Language Arts
Pinon Accelerated Middle School
Pinon Unified School District #4, Pinon, AZ

This lesson demonstrates how technology can be combined with best teaching practices to engage students and improve reading skills.

Mrs. Lors uses a variety of teaching approaches to help her students take "center stage" in her classroom. The students explore compelling literature, discuss in small groups, develop there own unique stories and then present them to the class for critique as "young authors.".

A wireless mobile computer lab and LCD projector allow Mrs. Lors to easily integrate technology into the lesson to engage the students, enrich the content and extend learning. While teaching literature she is able to teach technology skills such as word processing, editing on a computer, using email and authoring presentations. The primary focus is improving reading and writing skills, and secondarily on technology skills.

Mrs. Lors started her successful teaching career in Seoul, Korea and was recently named a GLAD Model teacher in 2003.

She strongly feels that technology is an important tool for teaching today's students. "Do not fear technology. If you do not know how to do something, chances are one of your students will help you." She also believes that relationships are critical to working with middle school students. One of her favorite things about teaching in Pinon is that she sees her students and their parents outside of school. "Pinon is a very small town so we all know each other and see one another all of the time. There is such a wonderful sense of family here."
