Lynn
Fox
6th and 7th Grade Language Arts
Renaissance Magnet Middle School
Flagstaff Unified School District, Flagstaff, AZ
Mrs. Lynn Fox brings to us a well organized and developed Language Arts
lesson that enfolds the Six Writing Traits of the Arizona Academic Standards
into a writing assignment. After 19 years of teaching Language Arts, Mrs.
Fox is able to demonstrate for us how to keep students engaged and encouraged
as young authors. Her skills are evident in this lesson as she brings
the novel The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster into a concluding
exploration of the Six Writing Traits.
Mrs. Fox teaches at the Renaissance Magnet Middle
School in Flagstaff, Arizona, and has been honored as Outstanding
Educator of the Quarter by the Flagstaff Public Schools. In 2000
and in 2001 she was named Outstanding Middle School English Teacher.
In this lesson you will note her excellent classroom management
skills and the way a structured classroom environment can lead to
individual creativity in the writing process.
The class is preparing to write a letter to the author and the students
are reviewing the six writing traits and the tips that relate to each
trait. In this class we see the students are having fun and enjoying the
process. Mrs. Fox surrounds her students with reinforcing technology and
personal encouragement. She uses cooperative learning to involve each
person in the class and gives congratulations and kudos to each student
as they move together through the prewriting process.
“My students keep me young and active," states Mrs. Fox.
"I love knowing I can make a difference in their lives.”
