Mrs. Lois Rodgers, the 2000 National Rural and Small School Teacher
of the Year, presents a concluding lesson to her multi-grade Advanced
Placement English class. She has guided her students through the six trait
rubric for writing in various genres in the six weeks prior to this lesson.
As her students read, explored and compared the novels, Conrad's Heart
of Darkness and Golding's Lord of the Flies, Mrs. Rodgers
employed the general concept of Darkness. Her students were led into the
exploration of both personal and general expressions of Darkness. The
use of cooperative learning was very effective as well as both oral and
written metacognition and peer review.
Patagonia High School has 100 students and Mrs. Rodgers is the one and
only English teacher. Her students have achieved statewide prominence
with the highest AIMS scores in the state. Her students receive more scholarships
per capita than nearly any other school in the state. Her classes are
hallmarked by high student achievement even when school funding does not
allow for many of the technology advances that other larger high schools
enjoy.
