An Integrated Lesson: Language Arts, Math and Science

FoxMartha Taylor
2nd Grade
Thomas M. Knoles Elementary School
Flagstaff Unified School District, Flagstaff, AZ

In this lesson, Mrs. Taylor lead her students into discovering how to count by ones, fives, and tens by using the calendar. She guides the children into a personal knowledge of what "100" looks like and how 100 days feel as they prepare for the One Hundredth Day Party to be held that afternoon.

She integrates science into the students day by discussing the weather with the use of a class-made barometer, the newspaper and the computer. She encourages her class to predict the weather and reinforces their predictions with graphs.

Mrs. Taylor's main focus is language arts, and she holds firmly to the concept that excellent readers begin as excellent writers. She surrounds her students with a wealth of literature and published works. She helps every student in her class to realize they are authors.
