Subject Area: Mathematics Strand 1: Number Sense and Operations
Concept 1, Number Sense: Understand and apply numbers, ways of representing
numbers, the relationships among numbers and different number systems.

Learning Objectives:
The students will be able to write and say many words with the short _u_ sound.
They will talk about rules pertaining to what to do when adding an ending to the word such as ___ing, ___ed, ___est, ____er, etc.
They will spell and write the words on their paper. They will then write sentences that are dictated and sentences of their own using the words.
They will alphabetize certain words.

Instructional Activities:
Mathematics
Directions: The students will talk about the calendar for the day. Since it is February 6, 2002, they will see how many equations they can make to get 6 for the answer. Since it just happens to be the 100th day of school, they will see how many ways they can write 100. They will use an expanded number and money. They will count in several different ways.
Science
They will look on the computer at the weather channel for the high and low temperature for the day and what the temperature is in different parts of the country. They will mark their calendars and check the high and low pressure on the class barometer.
Spelling, Writing, and Language Arts
The students will write the following words and put endings on the words.
Words: bus, butter, cup, cut, dull, duck, fun, funny, gum, hut, humble, jump, just, lump, luck, must, nut, pull, put, pump, rut, rust, run, sun, such, truck, tub, up, upon, us, under, understand, supper, rub, rubber, stuck,Sight words: because, your, you're, were, where, we're, brother
Have students underline: upon, us, under, understand, supper and put the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, on top of them to show alphabetical order. Using the
following for the sentence dictation:
Mom said, "You must run tell and your brother that the truck is stuck!"
You're lucky because you had such a good supper last Saturday.
Were they running to catch the bus just in time?
As the students finish writing each sentence, go around to check. Put them on the board for all to make any necessary corrections. Have one student that got it spell out the words and tell what to punctuate. Give instructions to underline pulled, funny, understand. They will write their own sentences using the words. Have the students read the sentences they wrote out loud. Write these words in cursive: duck, cut, hut, luck, dull, and tub.
